The purpose of photography

• When photography began, what was the most common subject matter?
  The most common subject matter in photography when it first began was portraits and portraits on dead bodies.

• Why do you think this was?I feel this was the most common subject because it was to make memories.

• What might these early photographs have been used for?
  Many early portraits were of Kings and wealthy people. The people that could afford to have these images taken. So they might have been used for galleries

• When did photographs of people (portraiture) become more common? What brought on this change?By 1500 portraiture had become a major painting genre. But in photography it became more common in the 19th century. Also the reduced time it took for exposure times made it a lot easier to capture a person made portraiture photography populate over paintings.

• What were the main purposes of portrait photography?The main purposes for portraits were to capture memories of family and to reflect wealthiness. They were done for historical purposes for future generations.

• Where were family portrait studios commonly found? What do you think the main purpose of these was?If it was a wealthy family it would be at their house/company as a keepsake and to show wealthiness. For families that weren’t as fortunate the studios would be in seaside, holiday resort towns taken as a memory.

• When did photography become available to the masses?Around the 1900s.

• Which company pioneered photography for everybody?Kodak pioneered photography for everyone.

• How were they able to make it available to everybody?To make it available for everyone they had the camera manufactured to where it was being made is masses by machinery.

• What are the purposes of photography in the modern era?The main purposes of photography was to capture a memory and for personal use.

• How do you think it has changed since the beginning?I think it has changed dramatically as now you can take an image and see it instantly. The technology has made it a lot easier to take an image, with short exposure times and set up.

• What is the main purpose of your photography?The purpose my work is to capture an image as you see it and to make memories.
